Transferring to CEng or IEng

Going from Technician to Incorporated Engineer (IEng)

Technicians may become an Incorporated Engineer naturally through increased responsibility and knowledge. One of the ways to ensure this happens is to increase your technical knowledge by studying for more qualifications. Having an accredited bachelor’s degree in engineering or technology is one of the benchmarks for IEng registration. You can also build on your experience through further learning, workplace learning, self-directed learning, increased responsibility, engineering projects, and training courses.

Your development checklist

  • Maintain your knowledge of technology and apply it at work.
  • Apply theoretical and practical methods.
  • Apply technical and commercial management skills.
  • Manage the planning and organisation of tasks, people and resources.
  • Learn about budgetary control.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement in your business processes.
  • Involve yourself across design, development, manufacture, construction and operations.

Going from Incorporated Engineer to Chartered Engineer (CEng)

Chartered Engineers are innovators and have technical responsibility for complex engineering systems. This means they hold highly technical and professional leadership roles.

The benchmark for the role of Chartered Engineer usually requires formal learning to Masters level, unless you already have strong academic grounding, but this is one way to gain the underpinning knowledge and understanding. Other ways include work-based learning, training courses, equivalent formal qualifications, and more

Your development checklist

  • Develop leadership skills.
  • Improve or exploit new and advancing technology.
  • Pioneer technology.
  • Apply services or management methods.
  • Design, develop, and research analytical solutions.
